Hard Eight (1996), PTA’s first feature film, is a moody crime drama that asks the viewers to take a bet on the emerging director. Set in diners, casinos, and motels, the film follows drifters on the edge of society, who find loneliness and comfort inhabiting these spaces of Americana. As they move between liminal places, the outcasts search for any shred of redemption that can be found.
Sydney Brown (Philip Baker Hall) is a seasoned gambler who takes naive John Finnegan (John C. Reilly) under his wing, teaching him how to game the system. Their almost-familial mentorship is put under strain when John falls hard and fast for Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a cocktail-waitress-turned-sex-worker. Jimmy (Samuel L. Jackson) rounds out the cast as a casino security guard, creating—much like the craps wager the film’s title refers to—a set of four dichotomous characters. Looping and reflective, Hard Eight begs the question: Who is worth taking a chance on?
