One Battle After Another (2025) is PTA’s tenth film and his first to garner the director an Oscar—for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also marks Anderson’s final collaboration with assistant director and producer, Adam Somner, who passed away in 2024 and to whom the film is dedicated. One Battle After Another very loosely adapts Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland (1990). With a large ensemble cast and a frenetic, gripping pace, the genre-bending satirical action-comedy deals with revolutionary movements, race, and the complexities of familial relationships, in the process somehow still emerging as both one of PTA’s funniest and most touching works.
The film follows former revolutionary Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) as they navigate the return of an old enemy. It begins with an extended prologue featuring Bob’s time with the leftist militant group The French 75 and his relationship with Willa’s mother, fellow radical Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor), before turning to his retirement from a much wilder lifestyle after his daughter’s birth. Sixteen years later, when the teenaged Willa is abducted by the nefarious Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn) who once brought down The French 75, Bob is forced to return to the world he left behind, while Willa grapples with her absent mother’s past and her own relationship to revolutionary action.
