GREYHOUND Gre-hound; Grig-hound; Herhound ; Leporarius; Long-dog An attractive breed nearly 4,800 years old, the Greyhound was used as a coursing dog in Egypt by the Pharaohs, and is mentioned by Ovid, Xenophon (second century), Howell Dda’s Welsh Laws (tenth century, and Chaucer. The breed was probably introduced into Britain by the Phoenicians. The keeping of Greyhounds for coursing was only allowed at one time to privileged persons, but in 1776 the open Swaffham Coursing Club was founded. The famous Waterloo Cup was inaugurated in 1836 at Sefton Altcar, later becoming a sixty-four dog fixture, whilst the Greyhound Stud Book followed in 1882. To-day the track-racing Greyhound attracts millions of tans, whilst the Show type is, through no fault of its own, gradually leaving the bench. Height 26-27 in. Weight 65 lb.
